The current Australian Psychological Society recommended fee for a session with a psychologist is $280.00.
My fee is $240 per weekday consultation, and $260 for Saturday appointments.
For more information about how these fees are calculated, please click here.
No referral is required to see a psychologist privately, and many private health funds will offer rebates with ancillary cover packages.
Alternatively, Medicare currently provides a $131.65 per session rebate for up to 10 sessions per calendar year with me provided you have a referral from a psychiatrist, or a complete GP Mental Health Care Plan.
NB: The 'extra 10' rebates that were allocated during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic were discontinued on 1 January 2023, but rebated telehealth sessions due to COVID-19 concerns are still available.
My admin team can also process smaller rebates for psychological services under other four other Medicare schemes:
Eating Disorder Management Plan
Up to 40 rebates with a psychologist over a 12 month period for clients with a diagnosed eating disorder and psychiatrist support.
Chronic Disease Management Plan
Up to 5 rebates per calendar year with allied health professionals, including psychologists, to address an ongoing medical condition.
Follow-up services for Aboriginal or Torres-Strait Islander people
Up to 5 rebates per calendar year in addition to any sessions for Chronic Disease Management.
Pregnancy Support Counselling
Up to 3 rebates per pregnancy within the last 12 months.
Please note that these rebates are not meant to cover a full course of treatment; they are designed to give clients financial support in the early stages of therapy.
How do I access Medicare rebates?
Speak with your GP; if they believe you are eligible and would benefit from seeing a psychologist they will complete the appropriate care plan(s) with you. You can request that the referral be made directly to me at Whole Body Psychology, but it is not necessary. After a set number of rebates, progress will be reviewed with your GP, and additional rebates may be prescribed if appropriate.
To claim a Medicare rebate, you will need to provide both your Medicare card and the referral letter before your session begins. After settling the full fee my admin team process any rebates for you and Medicare will refund into your nominated account within a day or two. Please note that it is your responsibility to keep track of how many rebates are available to you.
What about private health rebates?
Each private health fund has its own guidelines and processes for rebates; you will need to check your level of cover to find out how much you'll get back.
What about NDIS funding?
If you have self managed or plan managed funding, my admin team can bill the NDIA directly. Please note it is your responsibility to provide a copy of the support plan and appropriate item numbers, and to book sessions according to your own budget.
Nonattendance fee
Meaningful therapy hinges on consistency and mutual respect, and late cancellations prevent clients on the waiting list from accessing the support they need. If a session is not attended or is cancelled with less than 48 hours' notice, a non-rebatable fee for the full session is incurred. Outstanding fees must be settled before any subsequent consultations can begin.
